Water babies
Most parents agree that it's a great idea to get your child swimming from an early age. As well as being a fantastic way to exercise the whole body, if your kids are comfortable in the water early on, they will have the chance to enjoy more water-based activities as they get older. You'll also be a lot less anxious about their safety on holidays near the beach or pool.

Some experts also believe that swimming can increase intelligence, concentration, alertness and perceptual abilities as well as encouraging improvement in social, emotional and physical development. Wider issues aside, just taking your kids swimming, or letting their grandparents take them, is good for the whole family.

Having a ball
Throwing, kicking or bouncing a ball around develops hand-eye co-ordination and social skills within a group. It also helps children to identify with other people and learning the rules of the game all adds to their social and physical development. And we couldn't get away without mentioning that the World Cup is around the corner, so how about organising a mini tournament?

Garden games
Kids love playing in the garden but for keen gardeners, the rough and tumble of outdoor play next to prized flower beds is something to discourage rather than embrace, so how about creating a separate play area for your children? Whether it's a sandpit or a swing, having their own outdoor space means that they won't have to interfere with yours.

Encourage them to help you with the gardening - you could give them their own flowerbed where they can get stuck into all the planting and digging they like - as we all know, getting mucky and creative outdoors is a dream come true for most kids. Take a look at some ideas to help your kids become a real garden explorer!

Not to worry if you don't have a garden, why not see what your local park or forest has to offer? Tree-spotting, collecting leaves and finding patterns in nature can be a big hit for small and inquisitive minds!

On your bike
One of the best forms of exercise for children and adults alike is cycling. That's why it's such a great family activity. If you're going on a long journey with young children, tag-along or trailer bikes allow your child to help out or freewheel and enjoy the ride when they want to.

Keeping your kids in tow is a great way of getting them used to cycling at speed but it's no substitute for the real thing. For older kids, cycling allows them to explore and get to know their neighbourhood, make new friends and builds their confidence in the wider world. Why not take a look at how you could get your kids started.

Are you having fun yet?
Arranging the occasional day out and about with the kids can be great fun, but while getting away from it all can be good for both you and your children, there's no need to go to extraordinary lengths to keep them active. Even a trip to the local playground will help keep your child healthy and entertained. Lots of parents find that going with another family can really take the pressure off – the kids tire each other out while the adults can catch a bit of grown up time!
