Finding out that you are pregnant for the first time is just the most exciting and
terrifying feeling all rolled into one. There's the excitement of what the future will
bring and the fear of the unknown - and, on top of that, you need to buy a new
wardrobe because suddenly nothing fits any more.
For the first few months, I kept wearing normal clothes, but a size bigger. I wish I was
one of those people who didn't really grow, and could adapt my existing wardrobe, but no,
I looked ridiculous. Nothing fitted properly: sleeves miles too long, necklines baggy and
Coco the Clown-style trousers! Believe me, not a route to go down. When your emotions
are all over the place (people always say you look blooming, but all you're really
feeling is fat), the last thing you need is to feel like is a sack of potatoes.
I was determined not to change my style, but had no idea about maternity wear.
Reluctantly taking my first foray into a whole new fashion field, I admit I had a totally
preconceived idea - and how wrong I was!
What I found was that you need to look at your everyday clothes, be very honest with
yourself, and then translate that into a capsule wardrobe.
I didn't have to compromise my style at all. I could still find sleek black tops, skinny
jeans and then wear my faithful ballerinas - sensible and stylish, and I didn't look
like some extra out of Little House on the Prairie.
I bought an invaluable wrap jersey dress in both black and chocolate and wore them for
both day and evening - simple but chic, and most importantly, very comfortable. I
also lived in wide-leg cords at the weekend and as a treat to my ever-growing
self I bought some pretty but practical underwear - like this season's fantastic
black lace-edged boy shorts and vest.
It was great to find all these key pieces in one place - on the Blooming Marvellous
website. I have a permanent wardrobe crisis in my non-pregnant life, so you can
imagine how tough it was when I really didn't have anything to wear.
The other thing I loved is the ease of internet shopping - invaluable when you are
pregnant. I would order in my lunch hour and it would arrive, beautifully packaged, a
couple of days later. The sizing was great - I hardly had to return anything.
The other advantage is that you can try things on in the comfort of your own home.
Stripping off in a changing room makes me uncomfortable at the best of times, so the
thought of being surrounded by full-length mirrors when I had a bump was positively
scary!
I just feel that it is so important to feel confident and stylish in what you wear even
with a bump!
