Food, drink and gifts are big parts of Christmas but we all know that the reason we rush around and do it all is the kids. They're the ones who make Christmas really special. Whether you're off to stay at someone's house or you're playing host, we've some great ways of making sure kids of all ages have a happy time. We've even figured out how parents can take time out to enjoy the Christmas cheer. Here are our top tips:

Babies and Toddlers

  • If you're visiting don't forget to pack their favourite toy or blanket. A backup is also a good idea!
  • A portable cot is an absolute must
  • Night lights: Have one handy or if you're travelling take yours with you
  • You might want to consider having a supply of spare nappies on hand
  • Cordon off a quiet area of the house and let the older children know it's out of bounds
  • Take turns in checking on kids so that all adults can enjoy the party
  • If you have a trusted babysitter why not ask her to take charge for the evening. It might even be worth paying her to help out for the morning

Older children
Turn all that expectation and energy into a real occasion by giving the kids their own Christmas party! A sleepover is the ideal basis for a super kids party; it's easily done and the kids will have a brilliant time. Here's how:

  • Create a dorm atmosphere with all the kids in sleeping bags so there are no arguments about beds, sofas etc
  • Make sure everyone knows where the bathroom is and where the lights are
  • You might want to theme it around watching a particular favourite DVD and make it a movie evening and special snacks
  • Give them disposable cameras to record the event. Or maybe even a digital camera if they're comfortable with it
  • Allowing them to stay up later than usual means you get to lie in!
  • Continue the party atmosphere into the morning by having breakfast laid out. Include some special treats like muffins along with cereals, fruit and mini yoghurts. These can all be spread out the night before along with crockery and cutlery. You might consider another video for the morning or pre tune the telly to Cbeebies
  • Draw straws to see which adult gets up to supervise. Or if you have an au pair, ask her to help out so you can all lie in!
