Of course, dads like everyone else can be hard to please. Sometimes, giving him a tie or a box
of chocolates just won't do. If you're looking for an idea for a present or activity here's
our Father's Day top picks!
- Breakfast in bed – always a good start to the day – a royal treat of breakfast in bed
will make Dad feel like a king!
- BBQ time - nothing appeals to the hunter gather instinct more than the permission to
ignore the kitchen and go for the flame grilled dinner instead. Just make sure you have umbrellas
ready for the traditional summer downpours.
- Day trip – get away on a dad oriented day out. Think of all those weekends when you've
thought, "it'd be great to go to such-and-such" and make the time to do it this weekend.
- Football – for football fanatic dads the World Cup's come along to entertain them – now
that's some effort! Brazil will be playing Australia on June 18th.
- Hand-made card – nothing warms a heart more than a potato print card! It can be expanded
to become hand-made gift wrap, placemats, office decoration – you name it, there are endless
possibilities in potato prints. For more ideas, see our card feature below.
- Star of his own story – make up a Dad-oriented story along with your little one. You can
then make a book or tell him the story which the kids can illustrate. Dad and the dragon is always
popular, or maybe he fancies himself as a bit of a wizard?
- 'Get out of jail free' cards – these work well on mother's day too! Make up some 'Get out
Jail Free' cards for Dad to use on Father's Day – how many is up to you, but he can use them to
escape from the rigours of washing up, doing the DIY or other such fatherly duties.
- Fathers-to-be day? – so your baby and Dad haven't yet met? That's
no reason to skip Father's Day – Fathers-to-be deserve a special day too!
make a Father's Day card
Here's an idea for a Father's Day card that looks great and you can make with children of any
age, even babies.
- Fold a piece of either coloured or white card lengthways. On the front of the card
write "Dad" in large letters, making sure that there is plenty of room inside each letter.
- Next carefully spread PVA glue inside each letter.
- Either you or your child can then sprinkle glitter over the card so that it sticks to
the glue inside the letters.
- Gently brush off any excess glitter.
- If you like, you can get your child to draw a picture on the card, or if you have a
baby, a handprint done in child-safe water-soluble paint will be a nice reminder of a
first Father's Day.
Another idea is to print shapes onto the card using potato printing. Once you've carefully cut shapes in the potato, parents and kids can enjoy making patterns with the potato pieces.
