Here are some useful tips to help you take pictures you'll want to share with family and friends for years to come.

take snaps regularly – ok, so maybe quantity doesn't equal quality, but by keeping a camera handy you can catch some of those incidental and unplanned moments in your baby's life. Remember a camera isn't just for Christmas (or Birthdays)!

be patient - Don't expect to get the perfect shot immediately – the great thing about digital cameras is that you can take loads of pictures and edit out all the 'not-quite-right' shots afterwards.

shoot at eye level – Try sitting on the ground and snapping some photos from the child's perspective. Expressions will look more natural and your flash photos will be more evenly lit. You'll also experience a whole new sense of scale – remember your own first memories when your mum seemed huge and kitchen work surfaces were an out of reach world!

get close – Fill the camera's viewfinder or LCD display with your subject to create pictures with greater impact. Close up portraits can create great, impactful shots bursting with expression and character. Quite often, curious toddlers won't give you a choice once you're down at their level, so take their photo close up – it'll reveal their sense of curiosity and wonder.

where's the light coming from? – Figure out where the strongest light's coming from and try to frame your pictures with the sun/light behind you or to the side. When the light's to one side, you'll get better shadows and definition and with the light behind you, you'll get more balanced colour.

hold your baby's attention – Sometimes, getting your baby to remain still can be quite a task, but a favourite toy will put them at ease and hold their attention. Finger puppets, bright and colourful objects and daft noises also help! Much loved toys make a great addition to your baby's photo as in years to come you'll be amazed by the sense of scale they provide and the wear and tear they'll have received over year's of love (and washing)!
