While your baby is still just a few weeks old, a baby carrier or sling is probably
the easiest way to take him or her out and about. Starting with a sling also means you can take
your time choosing the right pram (check for the British Standard mark BS4139) or pushchair
(check for BS4792). You'll also need to get a car seat that's suitable for newborn babies.
Some prams have an integral car seat - these are particularly useful, as you won't have to
wake your baby to move him or her from the car into the pram.
Knowing exactly what to pack in your
changing bag can
be a bit tricky – that's why our
checklist of essential items should make heading out and about with your baby much easier.
- Clean nappies – disposable nappies are probably best when you're not at home
- Plastic, re-sealable bags for soiled nappies
- Wet wipes and tissues
- Sanitising lotion
- A portable changing mat – it will help make your baby comfortable and it's more sanitary
- A full change of clothes for your baby
- Bottles, baby food and a bib. For an older child, don't forget to take a few quick snacks,
plus a bowl and spoon if necessary
- Depending on the age of your child, a small toy or book will help keep them amused
- A blanket in case it is colder than you expected
- A bottle of water and a snack for mum
